About Onyx

Overview

Onyx is a semi-precious variety of silica minerals, made up of quartz and moganite. It is formed mainly in the gassy cavities of lava, in which some the primary sources come from Brazil, India, Hawaii, Madagascar, Indonesia, Yemen, Uruguay, Germany and parts of the United States. It has sparkly translucence that is unmatched by any other stone. It looks like a gemstone, with wavy bands of amber, ivory, and white fused together in a single, fluid pattern. When backlit, onyx radiates a soft, ethereal light. Onyx exudes a royal and striking appearance.

Characteristics of Onyx

Onyx has parallel bands in contrasting or alternating colours that can come in almost any colour including black and white, except for purples and blues. Onyx is highly sought after for its shimmer and semi-translucent effect that allows light to shine through the stone. This makes Onyx a luxurious, creative option for backlighting. Due to this, Onyx often comes in polished finishes to enhance its property. The degree of translucence varies from onyx to onyx, depending on the colour, thickness and surface finish.

Applications

Onyx continues to charm designers and homeowners alike, being widely used in building projects for feature walls, countertops, surfaces, and even flooring.

Care + Maintenance

Particularly for countertops, Onyx requires special care to retain their beauty. Onyx should be sealed upon installation and re-sealed at regular intervals, and should be polished occasionally. If spills occur, the stone should be cleaned immediately. With proper care, the beauty of the onyx will last for years.
